Grayson Perry: Super Rich Interior Decoration

Money on Holiday, 2019
One of the great sacrileges against art committed by interior designers over the decades has been to convert antique vases into table lamps. Channelling this transgressive spirit with Money on Holiday, I have done this to my own work. Utility is often cited as a boundary that divides art from design. Here, I have made an artwork that usefully lights on where capital goes to get away from it all. A kitsch vacation souvenir brought back after popping over to visit one’s millions at some cheesy tax haven. The photographs on this work are by my friend, and I like to think kindred spirit, the photographer Martin Parr. I particularly like his close-ups of gnarled manicured hands, freighted with huge jewels, clutching flutes of champagne.
