Vote Tory, 2019
One of the most decorative pots, with its pastel marbling, hearts and flowers and platinum stars, is Vote Tory. Whenever I meet a young artist and I ask them what sort of art they make, they often answer “political activist art”, to which I might reply “oh you mean left-wing art”. The contemporary art world, I think, seems to operate on the assumption that everyone entering an art gallery has progressive, leftleaning sensibilities. A thought that makes you wonder if all the progressive left-leaning art might be preaching to the converted. I am not sure how political an artwork Vote Tory is, for in a debate taking place mainly on social media, political issues seem to have become meaningless symbols on flags that opposing forces wave angrily in each other’s faces: opposing forces not divided by politics but by culture. The words Vote Tory may have become “merely” decorative. Whether art collectors, super-rich from investments, property or inheritance vote Tory, who can say?
